2012 BAFTA Screenplay Winners Announced

Posted on February 12, 2012

The winners of the 2012 BAFTA Awards have been announced. The awards were dominated by The Artist, which was written and directed by Michel Hazanavicius. Hazanavicius won Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for the film. The film about a silent movie star, played by Jean Dujardin, also won in the Best Film category.

The award for Best Adapted Screenplay went to Bridget O'Connor and Peter Straughan for their adaption of John le Carre's novel Tinker Tailor Solider Spy. Straughan's wife and co-writer Bridget died before the film was made. He says she wrote all the good parts and he just made the coffee. Straughan also thanked Carre in his acceptance speech:

"Oh. I'd just like to thank The Artist for not being adapted from a book. There's a lot of other people I need to thank: everyone at Working Title, Studio Canal, Focus Features for their support, my great producers, especially Tim Bevan and Robyn Slovo, an incredible cast, led by Gary Oldman, and our wonderful director, Tomas Alfredson. Tomas, every award for Tinker Tailor should have your name on it. And all of us standing on the shoulders of a giant, John le Carr, who was so generous and supportive throughout the whole adaptive process, but I know they will all understand if I accept this award on behalf of another collaborator. My wife, Bridget O'Connor, died before Tinker Tailor was made. She wrote all the good bits, and I made the coffee. So, Bridget, I love you, I miss you. This is for you. Thank you so much."
