Amazon Launches Day One, a Digital Publication Dedicated to Short Fiction and Poetry
Posted on October 31, 2013
Amazon has announced the launch of Day One. Amazon describes Day One as a literary journal for the digital age. The digital publication is dedicated to short fiction and poetry. It will include work from debut authors and will showcase one writer and one poet each week.
Each One Day issue includes a note from the editor introducing the writer and poet. The publication will also include extra content, such as playlists, illustrations and author interviews. Amazon will commission the cover art from emerging artists and illustrators.
Daphne Durham, Publisher, Adult Trade and Children's Group for Amazon Publishing, said in the announcement, "Literary journals have long been an important part of giving a voice and a platform to new and undiscovered authors. We are trying to add to that tradition in a digital age. Day One, with its weekly focus on writers and poets, allows us to showcase unique stories and poems and shine a bright light on these authors."
The debut issue features the short story "Sheila," by Rebecca Adams Wright and the poem "Wrought," by Zack Straight. The cover art was created by Forsyth Harmon. "Sheila" explores the relationship between an elderly widower and his loyal robotic dog. The poem, "Wrought," is described as "a vivid, unapologetic look at love and identity."
Wright says, "I'm very excited to participate in the launch of this new program dedicated to short fiction and to have my work reach readers who might not otherwise pick up literary journals."
An annual Day One subscription costs $19.99, but is available for $9.99 for a limited time. Day One can be found here on Amazon.com.
