American Journalism Review to Cease Publication

The Philip Merrill College of Journalism announced it will no longer be publishing the American Journalism Review. The archives and AJR website will remain online.
Merrill College Dean Lucy Dalglish says in a statement, "Over many decades, American Journalism Review has been an incredible value both to the college and to American journalists. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide the resources needed to keep AJR the vibrant, innovative online publication it deserves to be."
The magazine was launched as the Washington Journalism Review in 1977. It was renamed American Journalism Review in 1993. Ownership of the magazine was transferred to the Philip Merrill College of Journalism in 2011. When Rem Rieder left AJR to become a columnist and editor at USA Today. The magazine started publishing exclusively online in 2013.
Dalglish said in a statement, "Over the past two years, we have been enormously grateful to the University of Maryland for financially supporting the online magazine as part of our curriculum. It was a valuable lesson in innovation and entrepreneurship for our students. We plan to use the lessons we've learned in those classes to provide a new digital publishing capstone class."
