The L.A. Times reports some very sad news: popular young author Ned Vizzini died yesterday at the age of 32 in New York City. He committed suicide.

Vizzini had been open about his struggles with clinical depression. His first novel, It's Kind of a Funny Story was a semi-autobiographical tale of a high school boy whose suicide attempt lands him in a mental institution. Keir Gilchrist, Zach Galifianakis, Emma Roberts and Viola Davis starred in a feature film version of the book.

Vizzini also wrote science fiction, screenplays and essays. His most recent middle grade series is co-written with Harry Potter director Chris Columbus called "House of Secrets." The sequel, House of Secrets: Battle of the Beast is set for release on March 25, 2014. Vizzini wrote for various television projects and was working on J.J. Abrams' and Alfonso Cuaron's new show Believe which will air on NBC in March, 2014.

Ned Vizzini's brother Daniel told media outlets that Nat jumped of the room of his parents' home in Brooklyn. The New York City's medical examiner's office confirmed that the death was by suicide. Ned is survived by his wife and their son.
