Baen Books Launches Baen Fantasy Adventure Award
Posted on May 4, 2014
Baen Books has announced the launch of the inaugural Baen Fantasy Adventure Award. The award will be given at this year's Gen Con, which runs from August 14-17. Bean is seeking short fiction submissions of no more than 8,000 words for the competition. The short story must be fantasy. Baen says all fantasy genres are opening, including "epic fantasy, heroic fantasy, sword and sorcery, contemporary fantasy, etc."
The grand prize winner will be published as the feature story on Baen Books. Bean says payment will be "industry-standard rates for professional story submittals." The winner will also receive an engraved award and a prize package containing Baen Books.
There is no entry free. Only one submission per person may be entered. Submissions must emailed as a .RTF attachment. The contest opened for submissions on May 1st and will close on June 30, 2014.
Baen says it wants to see: "Adventure fantasy with heroes you want to root for. Warriors either modern or medieval, who solve problems with their wits or with their sword--and we have nothing against dragons, elves, dwarves, castles under siege, urban fantasy, damsels in distress, or damsels who can't be bothered to be distressed."
Baen does not want to see: "Political drama with no action, angst-ridden teens pining over vampire lovers, religious allegory, novel segments, your gaming adventure transcript, anything set in any universe not your own, 'it was all a dream' endings, or screenplays."
