Celebrity Gossip Fuels the Blogosphere

Posted on August 22, 2005

People love to gossip about the stasr so it goes to follow that they will also blog about the stars. Celebrity blogging is hot and there are countless blogs devoted to covering actresses, music stars and the latest hot heiress like Paris Hilton. A Baltimore Sun article says people are blogging about celebrities for interest and/or money. Some of the blogs mentioned in the Baltimore Sun article include Defamer.com, Jossip, Celebrity Scum, The Bosh and Popsugar.com. A Technorai executive told The Baltimore Sun that celebrity gossip is fueling the blogosphere:

Peter Hirshberg, executive vice president of Technorati, a site that indexes and tracks blog activity, said the public's affinity for celebrity gossip is helping to drive the burgeoning blogosphere. "Celebrity discussion is fueling this thing as much as politics or anything else," he said. And whenever something of gossip note occurs - Tom Cruise turning Oprah's sofa into a trampoline or Mariah Carey losing her top on a German television show - the number of blog entries goes sky-high.

These are the things gossip bloggers live for.

And the Washington Post's Joel Achenbach, who blogs at Achenblog, has figured out to get readers to his blog -- mention A-List celebrities like Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt:
The continual focus-grouping explains why most bloggers write as though their primary goal is to rise in the Google search results. The more you mention people like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, the more readers you will have, and the more links, and the more you will rise in Google's estimation. I have nothing really to say about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, and am not even remotely interested in Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, but I know that my blog will be read by more people if it mentions famous celebrities who might be secretly boinking, such as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
In an earlier post we noted that with camera phone technology tons of celebrity bloggers can quickly turn into the blogarazzi. Fortunately, a recent study found that blogging is not only okay but very important for society as a whole. That's right all that endless blogging about celebrities like Jennifer Anniston and Tom Cruise is making the world a better place.
