CNN Fires News Editor Marie-Louise Gumuchian for Plagiarism

Posted on May 16, 2014

CNN has fired news editor Marie-Louise Gumuchian for plagiarism. Poynter reports that CNN used plagiarism detection software and found she plagiarized over 50 articles. Most of the article were lifted from her previous employer, Reuters, and included copied content without proper attribution.

CNN published an Editor's note about the firing that was signed by three CNN editors, including Meredith Artley, Managing Editor and VP, CNN Digital. CNN says that it fixed the plagiarism in the stories and deleted one story entirely:

An unpublished story flagged last week during our editing process led to an internal investigation that uncovered other examples in about 50 published stories, and our investigation is ongoing.

We've terminated Gumuchian's employment with CNN, and have removed the instances of plagiarism found in her pieces. In some cases, we've chosen to delete an entire article.

Trust, integrity and simply giving credit where it's due are among the tenets of journalism we hold dear, and we regret that we published material that did not reflect those essential standards.

Marie-Louise Gumuchian had a blog on Reuters through November 2013 that is still available here. She joined Reuters in 2004 and was with them until she joined CNN late last year.
