David Seidler Wins Oscar for Best Original Screenplay

Posted on March 2, 2011

David Seidler won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for The King's Speech at the 83rd Academy Awards. It was his first Academy Award and first nomination.

In his acceptance speech, Seidler, 73, said, "My father always said to me I'd be a late bloomer."

He is the oldest writer to win the Oscar for original screenplay. Seidler was inspired to write George VI's story because he had also suffered from a stuttering problem as a child.

Aaron Sorkin won the other screenwriting Oscar at the 83rd Academy Awards, for his script, The Social Network.
