Before being named Life's Publisher in 1999, he held the positions of Associate Publisher (1997-1999), Advertising Sales Director (1995-96), and Eastern Advertising Sales Director (1993-95). He joined Time Inc., as sales representative with People Magazine in 1988. Fries began his publishing career with Conde Nast at House & Garden in 1981.

Fries will be responsible for managing all sales and marketing for the magazine, and will play a key role in determining the broader strategic direction of the Money franchise. He will assume his new role beginning June 19.
