ESPN Fires Writer Over Jeremy Lin Headline

Posted on February 20, 2012

EPSN has fired the writer behind the "chink in the armor" headline about rising New York Knicks' star Jeremy Lin. ESPN also suspended anchor Max Bretos for 30 days for using the phrase "chink in the armor" when he was asking a question on the air. Bretos, whose wife is Asian, says he did not intend his remark as a racial slur.

EPSN also issued an apology to the Asian-American community.

We again apologize, especially to Mr. Lin. His accomplishments are a source of great pride to the Asian-American community, including the Asian-American employees at ESPN. Through self-examination, improved editorial practices and controls, and response to constructive criticism, we will be better in the future.
Jeremy Lin says he doesn't care about the headline incident anymore. Lin said after Sunday's game, "I don't think it was on purpose or whatever, but (at) the same time they have apologized. And so from my end I don't care anymore. "Have to learn to forgive, and I don't even think that was intentional. Or hopefully not."

CNN reports that Anthony Federico, the fired ESPN writer, says the headline was an "honest mistake."
