Et tu, Deepak? Chopra Snubs Crown Books, Sells Memoir to Amazon.com

Posted on November 7, 2011

Trident Media Group announced that it brokered a deal between Deepak Chopra and Amazon.com's new publishing imprint. Deepak and his brother Sanjiv Chopra will publish their memoir, Brotherhood: A Tale of Faith, Big Dreams, and the Power of Persistence, through Amazon.

Trident Media Group chairman Robert Gottlieb said in a statement, "I am delighted that Amazon, Deepak and Sanjiv Chopra are in business together in a major book deal that is a game-changer for the publishing industry." One entity that is not in the least bit delighted with the deal is Deepak's other publisher, Crown Books. The New York Observer obtained this statement from Random House, reminding everyone that Crown is still Deepak's #1 favorite publisher and BFF:

"Dr. Chopra is an enormously productive and prolific author who has had several publishers simultaneously throughout his career, but who publishes the majority of his books with Crown's Harmony Books imprint. Presently, Harmony has multiple future books of his under contract. In addition, this year Crown established with Dr. Chopra the eponymously-named Deepak Chopra Books imprint, which will annually publish 4-6 books by authors selected by him, with the first title scheduled to be issued in spring 2013. We look forward to continuing our productive and flexible publishing partnership with Deepak Chopra."
So, let's get this straight. Crown Books gives Deepak his own book imprint bearing his name, then he turns around and sells his memoir to Amazon? We are looking forward to Deepak's memoir in which he will no doubt explain how the Law of Karma applies to this situation.
