Flora & Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo Wins the John Newbery Medal

The American Library Association announced today that has announced that Flora & Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo (Candlewick Press) has won the John Newbery Medal for the most outstanding contribution to children's literature.

The middle grade novel is illustrated by K.G. Campbell. Ms. DiCamillo was recently named as the National Ambassador for Young People's Literature. She has previously won a Newberry Honor for Because of Winn-Dixie and a Newbery Medal in 2004 for The Tale of Despereaux.

Four books were named Newberry Honor Books: Doll Bones by Holly Black (Margaret K. McElderry Books), The Year of Billy Miller by Kevin Henkes (Greenwillow Books), One Came Home by Amy Timberlake (Alfred A. Knopf) and Paperboy by Vince Vawter (Delacorte Press).

The Randolph Caldecott Medal for the most distinguished American picture book for children went to Locomotive, illustrated by Brian Floca (Atheneum Books for Young Readers).

The Coretta Scott King (Author) Book Award recognizing an African American author and illustrator of outstanding books for children and young adults is P.S. Be Eleven by Rita Williams-Garcia (Amistad). The Coretta Scott King (Illustrator) Book Award went to Knock Knock: My Dad's Dream for Me, illustrated by Bryan Collier (Little, Brown and Company).
