HarperCollins has acquired world rights for Frozen in Time: The True Story of the Race to Recover Lost Heroes of World War II by Mitchell Zuckoff, the author of Lost in Shangri-La. Zuckoff's new book tells the tale of three U.S. plane crashes in Greenland during WWII.
The book also tells the overlooked story of the US Coast Guard and Greenland during WWII. Zuckoff also tells the modern-day story of an expedition to dig and melt through the Greenland ice cap to recover one of the lost planes and the remains of the three airmen still aboard.
The following three plane crashes are covered in the book:
- A C-53 cargo plane crashes on Nov. 5, 1942. All the men aboard survive, but no one can get to them.
- A B-17 sent to search for the C-53 crashes on Nov. 9, 1942. All survive and take refuge in the tail of the plane, which hangs precariously over a seemingly bottomless crevasse.
- A US Coast Guard amphibious plane called a Grumman Duck rescues two survivors of the B-17 but crashes on a second rescue effort. All three men aboard (including one survivor from the B-17) die.
