Hearst Magazines Names David Granger Editor-in-Chief of Esquire
Posted on June 2, 1997
Hearst Magazines President Cathleen P. Black today named David Granger editor-in-chief of Esquire magazine. Granger, an executive editor at GQ magazine for the last six years, will assume the position immediately.
"Esquire is a major international brand that has earned a distinctive place among men's magazines," Black said. "I believe David's award-winning tenure at GQ, his ability to attract top writers, and his understanding of what men want today can make Esquire the most vibrant, intelligent men's magazine in America."
"Esquire was the first magazine I ever read," Granger said. "My ambition has always been to edit it. As rich as the magazine's history is, the key to Esquire's success is not to be found in the archives. Today's Esquire should be about service, substance and celebrating what it is to be a man today.
"The best writers write about all the subjects men are interested in. Intelligent, ambitious men are forever in search of ways to make their lives more challenging, more fulfilling and more enjoyable, whether the subject is politics, relationships, culture, careers, sports, sex, fashion, food and wine, grooming, personal finance or travel," Granger added.
"I am looking forward to working with David, and to building a great partnership at Esquire," said Valerie Salembier, vice president and publisher of Esquire. "His impressive track record and his desire to make Esquire the best in the men's category will give the magazine incredible momentum."
At GQ since October 1991, Granger was responsible for launching the highly popular "Personal Best" section of the magazine, and through GQs non-fiction coverage and recruitment of writing talent, is credited with helping that magazine earn two National Magazine Awards during his tenure. In the last three years, GQ was a finalist for 16 of these awards.
