How To Write A Happy Superman

Posted on June 22, 2006

To coordinate with the upcoming release of Superman Returns, Marvel is looking to revitalize the Superman comic series. The company hired Geoff Johns who explained in an interview with The Journal Gazette why it's harder to write a happy character than a tortured one.

Johns' says, "It's easier to write a character like Batman who's tough and gritty than someone like Superman who's happy with himself."

Johns also says, "It's corny, but Superman is so good that (writing him) is difficult."

Johns also talked about Superman's attire. He says, "He still flies around in the daytime. He still wears his underwear outside of his pants. He;s the only (comic book) character who can get away with that."

Hmmm...we're not so sure he's "getting away with it," given the plethora of "Is Superman Gay?" stories that the media keeps running. In any event, the Man of Steel will be available for viewing on the big screen when Superman Returns is released on June 30th.

Update: Johns gets to write about some of the favorite characters in comics and he loves it. Bleeding Cool reports that Johns said at SDCC: "You don't know it's your profession until it's you profession. I think the day I signed exclusively with DC I went 'Oh my god I'm a writer!'"

Johns says he likes writing about the smaller characters as well. He says, "There are no bad characters, only bad writers and bad stories."
