Bio-IT World, Inc., IDG's new business unit established to support the technology information needs of the life sciences market, announced the launch of the publication, Bio-IT World and the appointment of Kevin Davies, Ph.D., as editor in chief. Scheduled to debut in March, Bio-IT World will focus on the convergence of information technology and the life sciences, including the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, biochemical, healthcare and agricultural industries.

The premiere issue of Bio-IT World, with an initial controlled circulation of 25,000, debuts at IDG World Expo's BioITWorld Conference & Expo in March. The publication's mission is to provide quality, focused editorial information which enhances scientific research, the R&D process and the business success of the biotech and pharmaceutical industries through the effective utilization of bioinformatics and related applications of information technology in the life sciences. Bio-IT World will serve professionals in the life sciences who are involved in bioinformatics, drug discovery and development, genomics, proteomics, and related disciplines in industry, government and academia.

Dr. Davies is the founding editor of Nature Genetics and author of the book, Cracking the Genome: Inside the Race to Unlock Human DNA, a comprehensive account of the human genome project. Following research positions at MIT's Whitehead Institute and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Davies began his career in scientific publishing in 1990. Most recently, he served as editor in chief of Cell Press, where he directed the launch of three new journals, including Cancer Cell.

``The convergence of information technology and the life sciences has created a new breed of professionals who depend on computing power to drive the research and development process, helping to bring new products to market more quickly and efficiently than ever before,'' said Dr. Davies. ``Bio-IT World is the first publication to specifically address the unique needs of this community by providing the latest information on IT and bioinformatics news, technology products and services for life sciences applications.''

Headquartered in Framingham, MA, Bio-IT World, Inc., provides information products and services for bio-IT professionals. The company's premiere publication, Bio-IT World, and accompanying website will deliver news analysis and information on the technology infrastructure and applications driving innovation in the bio-IT community. Established in September 2001, Bio-IT World Inc., is an IDG company.
