Instagram Announces 200 Million User Milestone

Posted on March 26, 2014

Instagram announced today it has reached the 200 million user milestone. The Facebook-owned photo sharing site has also exceeded 20 billion photos shared so far. Instagram says 50 million new users have joined in the past month.

Instagram says, "The vibrance and diversity of this community has increased as it has grown. Over the past six months, we've seen new communities coming together in cities and towns across the world, whether they be in Guthrie, Oklahoma, or Guatemala City. With January's Worldwide InstaMeet 8, we saw record turnouts of communities coming together to form friendships, explore new places and celebrate creativity in all corners of the globe from New Dehli to New York, Bucharest, Nairobi and beyond."

Facebook paid $1 billion for Instagram in 2012 and it appears to have been well worth it at least from a user base and publicity point of view. The purchase also made Facebook a rival against Yahoo and Twitter in the social photo wars. As far as profitability goes, it is not known how much Facebook has made from Instagram, which only just recently started introducing advertising.
