J.K. Rowling Says Dumbledore is Gay

Posted on October 19, 2007

J.K. Rowling stunned an audience by announcing that Albus Dumbledore, Headmaster of Hogwarts, is gay. She is currently on tour in America and made the announcement in a question and answer period at Carnegie Hall.

Dumbledore being a gay man did not come as a surprise to some fans of the series but other readers were surprised by the news. J.K. Rowling says Dumbledore initially fell for the wizard Gellert Grindelwald.

The Telegraph paraphrases Rowling's news in an article. Dumbledore's love for Grindelwald ended up being a "great tragedy" and the powerful wizards ended up being rivals as after Grindelwald "turned out to be more interested in the dark arts than good." It is never a happy situation when your love interest turns to the "dark arts."

Dumbledore's full title is Professor Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore. Pottermore says Dumbledore is founder of the Order of the Phoenix. The Harry Potter online site also says he likes sherbet lemons and knitting patterns.
