John Green Moved to Tears by Shailene Woodley's Award Speech

Posted on April 13, 2015

We're not sure we've ever seen an author moved to tears at an award show because the actress accepting the award can't stop praising the author. But it happened last night at the 2015 MTV Movie Awards.

Actress Shailene Woodley had just won Best Female Performance for playing a dying cancer patient in the film version of John Green's The Fault in Her Stars. She dedicated the award to Green, who was in the audience.

Shailene said, "I feel like this award belongs to John Green because he gave this world a beautiful masterpiece -- a gift -- in the book The Fault in Our Stars. It changed my life when I read it and being a part of this film dramatically influenced who I am today."

She continued, "His words will transcend time because they transcend any age. There's not one single demographic that won't be affected by the wisdom the compassion and the beauty that he laces into every single thing that he does in his life." She thanked him for living his life every single day with integrity and compassion. She concluded by telling Green he had changed the lives of millions of people around the world.

It was a very moving tribute. The camera panned to Green after her speech and he was overcome with tears. The Fault in Our Stars won Best Picture and Green took the stage for that award. Take a look:
