Joss Whedon Talks New Characters for Avengers 2, Why He Did a Shakespeare Film

Posted on May 25, 2013

Joss Whedon was a guest on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon to talk about his film Much Ado About Nothing and how the script for Avengers 2 is progressing. Joss talked about two new characters from the Marvel universe that will be in the film: the brother and sister team, Quicksilver the Scarlet Witch.

Joss says their powers are visually interesting. In the first movie everyone had "punchy powers" so he was interested in characters with different powers:

"Besides the fact that I grew up reading them, their powers are very visually interesting. One of the problems I had on the first one was, everybody basically had punchy powers. 'I can hit,' 'I can also hit.' Hopefully it didn't get too boring. But coming into the second one, [Quicksilver]'s got super speed. [Scarlet] can weave spells and a little telekinesis, get inside your head. There's good stuff that they can do that will help sort of keep it fresh."

Jimmy asked him why he made a Shakespeare film. Joss explained, "I needed the money... I'll make dozens of dollars." The screenplay uses the original text by Shakespeare, but the setting is modern. He showed a clip of Nathan Fillion from the film, which looks really entertaining.
