Joss Whedon to Write, Direct Avengers 2, Develop Live Action Series for Marvel at ABC

Posted on August 7, 2012

Marvel just confirmed the good news: Joss Whedon will write and direct Avengers 2. Deadline reports that the announcement came during an earnings report teleconference with Disney CEO Bob Iger. Iger made the announcement, which Disney views as extremely favorable news that will affect future earnings.

Marvel must have ponied up some big bucks, because they've locked up Whedon through June 2015. Just a few weeks ago, Joss said he still was undecided about doing the sequel because of the massive time commitment involved. But the deal didn't just involved money: it involves a new, live action show for ABC based in the Marvel universe.

Marvel Studios made this statement: "Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015. As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel's The Avengers 2 as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC. He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel's cinematic universe."

This sounds like a very interesting deal indeed. Joss has always said he loves television and Marvel just handed him the keys to the kingdom. It couldn't be in better hands. We can't wait to see what he comes up with for ABC.
