A Conversation With James RollinsHe was a successful veterinarian with his own practice in Sacramento. But James Rollins had always loved writing. So he wrote on weekends and lunch hours at work, honing his craft. His hard work paid off. Rollins recently had two books debut on the New York Times bestseller list: Sandstorm (now out in paperback) and Map of Bones (William Morrow). Map of Bones is a spine-tingling thriller that mixes science, ancient mysteries, the Vatican and exotic locations. Map of Bones is the first book in the new SIGMA series, featuring an elite group of specialists with both special ops skills and scientific backgrounds who are sent all over the world to combat threats to the United States. The author describes the SIGMA team as essentially a cadre of "killer scientists-men and women who are deadlier than Bond and twice as smart." In this exclusive interview, Jim discusses the truth behind the science in Map of Bones, how growing up Catholic gives him a different perspective when writing a thriller set in the Vatican, and the dangers of allowing politics to trump science in the classroom.
