Spinning Worlds: The Writer's Art
October 25, 1997

One-day workshop and lunch for novice and professional writers. Faculty include Lola Haskins, author of five books of poetry and former National Endowment for the Arts Fellow; Sandra Thompson, Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction and novelist, Andrea Brunais, Editorial Page Editor of the Tallahassee Democrat, Ralph Berry, novelist and Professor at Florida State University, Deidre&Judson Knight, The Knight Agency, and Ray Bethke, Cyberscribe.

Conference runs from 9-4. Large group session, and poetry performance by Lola Haskins in a.m., small group sessions on poetry, novel, short fiction and journalism run twice in p.m. Pre-arranged individual short meetings with agent and/or cyberscribe. Conference and TWA membership $65, conference only $55, members $45.

Bouchercon '97
October 30 thru November 2, 1997

The Oldest and Largest annual Convention of Mystery Fans, Authors, Publishers, Mystery Book Dealers, Agents and like-minded travelers. The 1997 convention will be held in conjunction with a Writer's Workshop and will sponsor a Mystery Writing Contest for Monterey High School Students. The Diogenes Club (Sherlock Holmes Society) will be participating in the programming and will also hold a reception during Bouchercon '97.

Contests

*National Enquirer, at http://www.nationalenquirer.com, is still running a weekly contest with a $300 prize. Information is available at its website.

*The Afterthoughts Darkness Contest has a deadline of October 10th and $25 prize for best story and $10 for best poem. Information is available on their website at http://members.aol.com/ldyendless/Contest.html.

*The Kachina Rose Card Company's essay contest is for the romantically inclined. All entries must be in by midnight, November 16, 1997 and winners will be notified by email on December 20, 1997. Four winners will each receive an original 12"x16" floral oil painting by Tuscon artist Elizabeth Merchant. These paintings are valued at $200 and up at retail. Her recent floral paintings and entry forms are found on the card company's web site.

Contests for Young Adults
*Hewlett-Packard Young Authors' Writing Contest Runs from Sept. 25 through Nov. 3. Prizes for the writing contest include an HP Pavilion multimedia PC, an HP DeskJet photo-quality printer, writer's resource books and a scholarship to a local writer's workshop. Additional information on the HP American Youth on Books and Reading survey and the writing contest can be found at the HP Digital Book Club online.

*The "Sprint NFL Good Sports Essay Contest" gives every eighth grader in the nation the chance to win one of five trips to Super Bowl XXXII in San Diego. All eighth graders - whether their school is formally participating or not - may submit an essay that defines good sportsmanship in 200 words or less. Entries will be judged at the local, regional and national levels by current and former sports media.
All essays are due Oct. 3, 1997 and may be sent to "Sprint NFL Good Sports Essay Contest," 4600 Madison Suite 1300, Kansas City, MO 64112. Parents or teachers of eighth graders may get more information about the program by calling 1-800-669-1131 or by visiting the Good Sports Internet link at www.sprint.com.
