Contests
Playboy is running its annual fiction contest which is open only to college students. The first prize is $3000 and publication in the October 2000 issue of Playboy magazine. The entry deadline is January 1, 2000. Complete details are available on the website.The deadline for the NCWA 2000 competition, which has a $15,000 cash purse, is January 31, 2000. Screenplays, stageplays, fiction in all genres are ccepted. The competition is supported by Anthony Michael Hall, Francis Ford Coppola's Zoetrope All Story and others. Entry Fee: $30. The Santa Fe Writers Project is offering a new content with cash awards, including a first prize of $7,500 in both prose (fiction/nonfiction) and screenwriting categories. Judges include novelists Kate Horsley and Ray Robertson, and the final judge is award-winning author Richard Currey. Entry Fee: $45. Visit the website for more information.
Teen writers can enter the "Keeping Your Cool: Teens Against Violence" which began on September 27, 1999. Entrants will write a 750 to 1000 word essay discussing why they believe there has been such a recent dramatic rise in teenage violence, and what they believe can be done to prevent it. The entries will be separated into two different age brackets, 13 through 15 years old, and 16 through 19. In each age bracket, there will be one 1st place winners who will each be awarded a $1,500 scholarship, one 2nd place winners receiving a $750 scholarship, and one 3rd place winners receiving a $500 scholarship.
