1998 CBA Convention and Tradeshow

The 1998 CBA Convention and Tradeshow is the largest book industry event in Canada. The event organizers are expecting more than 4,500 booksellers, creators, publishers and those who supply and service the industry.

Western Writers of America 1998 Convention
Colorado Springs, CO
June 21 - 25
The Spur Awards Banquet will be held on Thursday night, the 25th, when the Spur Awards will be presented.

Barcelona Writers' Workshop
July 1 - 14
The Institute of North American Studies, a non-profit bi-culture center in Barcelona, Spain is initiating a 2-week fiction workshop with writers Elizabeth Cox, Jill McCorkle, Francisco Goldman, Speer Morgan, and senior editor of The Atlantic Monthly, C. Michael Curtis. Excellent hotel accomodations and cultural program plus encounters with the publishing community in Spain are unique facets of this workshop.

ClueFest 1998
July 10 - 12
ClueFest '98, a Mystery Readers' Book Fair will be having Charlaine Harris and Walter Satterwait as their Fiction Guests of Honor, with Dean James and Jan Grape as the Non-Fiction Guests of Honor, Barbara Burnett Smith as the Toastmistress, and Richard Centner as the Fan Guest of Honor. There will be dealer's rooms, book signings, author and expert panels, and a Mystery Book Auction.

Romance Writers of America 18th Annual National Conference
Anaheim California
July 30 - August 2
Each summer Romance Writers of America holds a national conference for members and other interested parties, designed to meet the professional needs of romance authors. The conference moves to a different city in a different part of the country each year to help make it accessible to as many RWA members as possible. RWA's 1998 conference will be held July 30 through August 2, 1998, at the Anaheim Hilton and Towers, Anaheim, California.


Contests

-- TV Gen's "Official Jewel Online Poetry Contest" is open until June 16th. One grand-prize winner will be awarded $500; Jewel will match that amount and donate it to the charity of the winner's choice. The grand-prize winner and 10 runners-up will receive a signed copy of Jewel's A Night Without Armor, as well as the audio CD version of the poetry.

-- Goosebumps fans have a chance to write their own terrifying story with a chance to win the Creepstakes -- a nation-wide contest in which fans finish a story by R.L. Stine. The Grand Prize is a trip to New Orleans to visit graveyards, mansions, and swamps. Details can be found on the Goosebump website at: http://www.scholastic.com/goosebumps/.

-- June 30, 1998 is the deadline for the quarterly L. Ron Hubbard's Writers of The Future Contest.
