The New York Times Company announced that Leonard P. Forman, senior vice president of corporate development, has been named president and chief executive officer of The New York Times Company Magazine Group, effective immediately, succeeding James (Jay) W. FitzGerald. The announcement was made by Russell T. Lewis, president and chief executive officer, to whom Mr. Forman will report. In his new role, Mr. Forman will be responsible for the Magazine Group's publications: Golf Digest, Golf World and Golf Shop Operations. Mr. FitzGerald, who is retiring from day-to-day oversight of the Magazine Group, will serve in an advisory role for one year as chairman.
Mr. Lewis said, "Our magazines are the leaders in their field in every measure: award-winning editorial, circulation leadership and financial profitability, and we intend to expand our lead in each of these areas. We salute Jay's accomplishments over the last 31 years which helped to bring this about. We are confident that Len's operating experience and strategic discipline, combined with the strong management team in place at the Group, will allow our golf related publications to reach even higher levels of accomplishment in the future."
Mr. Forman, 53, rejoined The New York Times Company as senior vice president of corporate development in April 1996. Formerly, he had been director of planning for the Company from 1974 to 1986. In 1995 he served as president and chief executive officer of a Nynex/Newsday joint venture for an electronic service that ceased when both companies altered their electronic strategies. He then became a media consultant until he joined The Times Company.
