LeVar Burton Launches a Kickstarter Campaign to Revive Reading Rainbow

Posted on June 1, 2014

LeVar Burton and Reading Rainbow launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring back the popular PBS show Reading Rainbow, which won a Peabody Award and 26 Emmys. But this time, the program aims to reach all children who have access to a computer at home or school and it will be free to stream by schools in need.

The programs will be available not just on tablets with an app (they have that right now) but will also be available on PCs and have much greater content, a larger digital library and more fun, informational field trips with LeVar and his friends. Encouraging literacy is a great use for Kickstarter and fans have already responded generously. LeVar was nearly moved to tears when he raised $1 million on the first day alone. The campaign has now passed $3 million and they are hoping to raise $5 million. Here is the Kickstarter video in which LeVar gets a little help from an old friend from Star Trek (watch until the end). You can learn more about the project and donate here.
