Edgar Allan Poe is one of the best known writers and poets. He had an amazing emotional and imaginative writing style. His writing is credited for helping to develop the mystery and horror genres. Poe's best known work is his poem, "The Raven," but he penned many notable poems and stories in his short career. He did not have a lot of time to write because he died at the young age of 40 on October 9, 1849.

Poetry
Poe repeated the word "Nevermore" to great effect in "The Raven." Nevermore was also the raven's name. Some of Poe's other poems include and "The Haunted Palace, Alone, The Bells" and "Spirits of the Dead."

Stories
Poe is also remembered for his creepy stories that include "The Fall of the House of Usher, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Gold Bug, The Black Cat" and "The Pit and the Pendulum." His Gothic and macabre stories covered murder, disease, revenge, insanity, death, mourning and being buried alive.

Novels
Poe's creative energy primarily went into the creation of poems and short stories, but he did write one novel. His only completed novel was called The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket . The novel follows Pym on his adventures aboard a whaling ship that is headed to the South Pole.
