Martha Stewart Befriends Nun, Pens Book Behind Bars

Posted on November 28, 2004

Martha Stewart is penning a memior about her time in prison. The Rocky Mountain News has an interview with the attorney for Carol Gilbert, a Roman Catholic nun and anti-nuclear activist who is currently serving a prison sentence of 33 months on convictions of obstructing the national defense and damaging government property for her role in an anti-war protest at a missile silo in 2002.

Sister Carol apparently has become friends with Martha and said that she hopes Martha will tell the stories of some of the women in the Federal Corrections Camp in Alderson, W. Virginia. Sister Carol is especially concerned about some of the women who received disproportionately lengthy sentences under federal mandatory drug-sentencing laws. Ok, that's all fine and good. But tell me again why we're sentencing non-violent peace-protesting nuns to lengthy prison sentences?
