Maurice Sendak Tells People Asking About Wild Things Sequel to Go to Hell

Posted on January 1, 2012

Author Maurice Sendak did an interview with TateShots, an interview series from Tate, a UK family of art galleries. Sendak is best known for his book, Where the Wild Things Are. But don't ever ask him why he hasn't written a sequel.

Sendak says, "People said why didn't you do Wild Things 2? Wild Things 1 was such a success? Go to hell. Go to hell. I'm not a whore. I don't do those things."

"Go to hell" is an expression Sendak has used before. In a 2009 interview, Sendak told parents who think Wild Things is too scary to "go to hell." Sendak doesn't even think Where the WIld Things Are is a children's book. He says he has never written a children's book.

Sendak says, "I do not believe that I have ever written a children's book. I don't know how to write a children's book. How do you write about it? How do you set out to write a children's book. It's a lie."

Sendak also says he doesn't believe in awards or clubs. Take a look:
