Meredith to Close Country America Magazine

Posted on October 6, 1998

Meredith Corporation has today it will close Country America magazine following the release of the holiday issue in late November. The bimonthly magazine, currently at a circulation of 900,000, was launched in the fall of 1989, in association with The Nashville Network (TNN) and Group W Satellite Communications.

Meredith Publishing Group President Christopher M. Little said that despite making content and design changes and broadening the advertising base, there just wasn't the market to support Country America. The closing affects 26 employees based in Des Moines, New York and Chicago. Little said Meredith expects to place many of these employees in open positions at Meredith.

"Closing a magazine is always difficult, particularly when you have such a talented and hard-working staff," said Little. "But, together with our partners, we reached the conclusion there isn't enough of a revenue base in this field to support a magazine of this size."

Meredith Corporation, headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa, is one of America's leading media and marketing companies. Meredith businesses center on magazine and book publishing, television broadcasting and integrated marketing.
