More to the Hunter S. Thompson Story

Posted on February 25, 2005

More disturbing details have emerged about the day of Hunter S. Thompson's suicide. Apparently, his wife was actually on the phone with him when he shot himself. "I was on the phone with him, he set the receiver down and he did it. I heard the clicking of the gun," Anita Thompson told the Aspen Daily News. Thompson's wife said that he had been talking about suicide for a while now, and that he "wanted to go out on top." She also said that his constant talk of suicide was causing problems in their marriage. Mrs. Thompson said her husband telephoned her and asked her to come home early from the gym so that she could help him with his column for ESPN. But instead of saying goodbye, he put the phone down and shot himself. His son, daughter-in-law and 6-year-old grandson were all in the house at the time of the tragedy.
