New York City is Getting a Pop Up Floating Library

Posted on August 22, 2014

Okay, now we're jealous. New York City is getting a Floating Library beginning on September 6th and running through October 3, 2014. The Floating Library is a pop-up library concept which will be lodged aboard the Lilac Museum Steamship in the Hudson River at Pier 25.

The library will be a mobile device-free zone, so be sure to turn off your electronics. The idea began with artist Beatrice Glow, who has worked with many people and sponsors to make this happen. The ship is being refurbished and restored. The main deck of the ship will be an outdoor reading lounge packed with books from underrepresented authors. At the end of the project, all the books will be donated to financially challenged high school students.

The library will also feature ongoing art installations, including paper rope swings and works by six sound artists who were inspired by literature. There are all kinds of other interesting events planned with free performances, workshops and roundtables. One session will focus on bookmaking by the Center for Book Arts and Small Editions.

This is going to be a very popular installation and space is limited. The organizers recommend that you wear comfortable shoes and clothing. To get around the ship, you may have to climb ladders, enter rooms with low ceilings etc. You can learn more about the Floating Library and upcoming events here.
