New York Magazine Goes From a Weekly to Biweekly Schedule

Posted on December 2, 2013

It's the end of an era. New York magazine is going from being a weekly magazine to a biweekly one. The New York Times reports that the magazine will now publish 26 issues a year, plus three special issues: the annual gift guide, the best doctors, and a food and drink issue.

The reason for the change is economic. Cutting the publishing schedule will save $3.5 million. That amount will now be devoted to the digital arm of the company. One bright spot in the news is that there will be no layoffs. In fact, the organization will hire 15 people to work on digital content and online sales. The print magazine currently has 400,000 subscribers.

In 2013 New York magazine was named Magazine of the Year by the American Society of Magazine Editors. But the company took a hit along with the rest of the industry after the 2008 recession. The online classified ad market, which magazines and newspapers relied on, pretty much disappeared. But the online arm of the company, which includes Vulture.com, The Cut and Grub Street, are prospering. In 2013 New York magazine was named Magazine of the Year by the American Society of Magazine Editors. The new publishing schedule will begin in March, 2014.
