Posted on October 20, 1997

The New York Times today announced plans to unveil a new Web site specifically designed for people living in, visiting or doing business in New York. The site, "New York Today," is part of a continuing strategy to extend the newspaper's reach and create new editorial and business opportunities in electronic media.

Located at www.nytoday.com, the Internet site's mission is to be the definitive online resource about New York life for New Yorkers and visitors alike. "The New York Times has served our readers in New York for over 100 years," said Arthur Sulzberger Jr., chairman and publisher. "This new digital initiative will be a cornerstone of our service for the next 100 years."

Scheduled to launch early next year, New York Today will offer content, guidance, utility and advertising addressing user needs in four vital categories: news and information; leisure and entertainment; life necessities; and reference and resources. "The web is flooded with information but very little of it is genuinely useful," said Martin Nisenholtz, president of The New York Times Electronic Media Company. "Our aspiration with New York Today is to create something essential to the lives of New Yorkers."
