ProQuest and NYTimes.com have announced an agreement to offer a historical digital archive of The New York Times newspaper dating back to 1851, when The Times was first published. The archive will be available on nytimes.com, the website of The New York Times, on a pay-per-view basis. ProQuest Information and Learning, a unit of ProQuest Company, creates and publishes databases for libraries and educational institutions.ProQuest has digitized all of the issues of The New York Times between 1851 and 1995. These issues of The Times contain more than 15 million articles and NYTimes.com has now integrated these articles into its search tools and pages. Readers may search by date, keyword, headline or byline; read a free preview of the first paragraph of each article; and purchase the article image. Readers may also access Times articles from 1996 through 2004 in text format through NYTimes.com's premium archive database. Articles are available for $2.95 each or in packages of four, 10 and 25 articles.
"The ability to efficiently search New York Times articles and advertising back to 1851 will be an indispensable tool for researchers, genealogists, historians and hobbyists," said Robert Larson, director, information architecture for NYTimes.com. "We are pleased to provide access to deep New York Times historical archives for our readers, especially in this election and Olympic year."
The New York Times digital archive is part of ProQuest Historical Newspapers, an exclusive database manufactured by ProQuest Information and Learning and distributed by them to educational institutions and libraries around the world. Other newspapers in ProQuest Historical Newspapers are The Christian Science Monitor, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and The Los Angeles Times. The ProQuest Historical Newspapers project was initiated in January 2001 as part of ProQuest's ongoing Digital Vault Initiative.
