Penguin recently announced it has taken full ownership of Snowman Enterprises Limited (SEL). With the acquisition, Penguin now controls key publishing, film, TV, digital and merchandising rights to Raymond Briggs' classic, The Snowman, which has sold over 8.5 million copies worldwide.

Penguin imprint Puffin plans to release audio ebooks of The Snowman and The Snowdog read by actor Benedict Cumberbatch, as well as new publishing in print and digital formats.

Tom Weldon, Penguin UK CEO, said in a statement, "The Snowman's enduring appeal is testament to the brilliance of Raymond Briggs' original vision. Penguin will continue to build on its enormous popularity and the opportunities that come from this acquisition are huge. Penguin's strategy of increased investment in intellectual property rights very much reflects an ambition to become a new type of publisher, creating original content and products - with storytelling at their heart - across all platforms."
