Penguin to Launch Bratz Publishing Program

Posted on April 4, 2003

Debra Dorfman, President and Publisher of Grosset & Dunlap, an imprint of Penguin Young Readers Group, has signed a book licensing agreement with MGA Entertainment. In the deal negotiated by Dorfman and Isaac Larian, President and CEO of MGA Entertainment, Grosset & Dunlap will launch a Bratz publishing program beginning with six titles in July of 2003.

The Bratz (Yasmin, Cloe, Sasha, and Jade) are girls with a passion for fashion and in 2002 they were the #1 selling fashion doll and were given the People's Choice Toy of the Year Award for the Bratz Stylin' Salon 'N' Spa. They won the same award in 2001 for their fashion doll assortment which continues to be popular.

The Bratz book formats will include two 7 1/2 x 10 1/2 paperbacks; one with scented aromatherapy bookmarks, the other with a magnetic picture frame; and four activity books with glittery tattoo stickers. Six more books are scheduled to launch this fall.

"I have always been a girl with a passion for fashion, so the Bratz really strike a cord in me; I understand why so many young girls are completely enamored with them," said Dorfman. "We are beyond thrilled to be partnering with MGA Entertainment, whose integrity, creativity, and sense of commitment to the Bratz brand fit well with The Penguin Group."
