Project X Screenwriter Defends Film

Posted on March 4, 2012

By now you've probably at least seen the trailer for Project X: a raunchy comedy about teens who throw a wild party to get in with the popular crowd. Then, it all goes horribly wrong. The film has been getting a lot of criticism about the activities of the teens in the film, especially the raunchy parts. Screenwriter Michael Bacall talked to The Hollywood Reporter about the criticism of the film, which opened this weekend.

Bacall, who wrote the screenplays for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (which we loved) and the new 21 Jump Street (which looks ridiculous, but funny), said: "The criticisms about the movie being amoral because kids are dancing and drinking and having a good time, I think that's absurd. Because kids have been dancing and drinking and altering their states of consciousness for a very long time, and this is nothing new."

Bacall seemed irritated that teen films that show gory violence get a pass, but films with wild partying get attacked. He said, "I don't usually hear those criticisms of hyper-violent movies with cartoonish head explosions. So I'd have call b.s. on that aspect of the criticism."

The party shown in the film is every parent's worst nightmare, that's for sure. The film is produced by Todd Phillips (The Hangover).
