Posted on April 11, 2001

Publications Unbound, a provider of ebooks for travel and outdoor activities, announced that it has been selected by Amazon as an official supplier of ebooks for the launch of its ebook store. Starting with the launch of the store, Publications Unbound will be the exclusive supplier of titles in the Travel Boutique on the Amazon ebook store.

Glenn Fawcett, President & CEO of Publications Unbound, says in the announcement, "We are excited to offer our exciting line-up of digital travel guides to more than 30 million customers worldwide on the Amazon site. Now consumers can enjoy the most current, best-of-breed travel guides from the world's top publishers instantly through this downloadable innovation."

Fawcett said Publications Unbound made its initial focus exclusively on the travel guide niche because they feel that this sector will be one of the first to take off because of the benefits the travel ebook provides the consumer. Some of the benefits Fawcett mentioned included portability and the need for timely travel information about changing travel or political conditions in destinations afar.

Publications Unbound is a private, Calgary-based ebook distributor representing over 100 travel guide publishers. Featuring titles such as Lonely Planet, Berlitz, and Fodor's, the content can be downloaded for reading on PDAs, PCs and in the future, wireless devices. The company's distribution is done by functioning as a digital wholesaler and providing travel guides through syndicated affiliates in the travel sector as well as with retail portals. Its revenue model is based on pay-per-download or subscription downloads generated from the consumer sites it wholesales to.
