Sam Smith Wrote New Bond Theme Song in Twenty Minutes
Posted on September 9, 2015
Singer-songwriter Sam Smith was given the honor of recording the new James Bond theme song. Smith's song for the upcoming film, Spectre, is called "Writing's on the Wall." Spectre will arrive in theaters on November 6, 2015.
Sometimes songwriters get a spark and the inspiration happens really quickly. This is what happened to Smith with Spectre. He told BBC Radio 2 that after he read the Spectre script he wrote the song in just 20 minutes.
Smith says, "I got called into the office with Barbara Broccoli and Sam Mendes and they gave me the script, I read the script... they said 'have a go at the song.' It's the quickest I've ever written a song - it took 20 minutes... and they loved it!"
Smith co-wrote the song with Jimmy Napes. Napes also co-wrote Smith's hit single, "Stay With Me."
Smith calls recorded the theme song one of the highlights of his career. He strongly hinted at his James Bond involvement earlier this week when he shared a photograph of a ring with the logo of the Spectre criminal syndicate and terrorist organization on it on Twitter.
Smith says he recorded the new Bond theme in January. Adele recorded the song for the last Bond movie, Skyfall.
Update 10-6-15: Sam Smith's James Bond theme is called "Writing's on the Wall." The music video directed by Luke Monaghan has also been released. The video includes some footage from the upcoming Bond film with actors Daniel Craig and Monica Bellucci. Take a look:
