Star Wars Returns to Marvel With Release of New Star Wars Comic Series

Posted on January 9, 2015

Star Wars is headed back home to Marvel. Marvel will release Star Wars #1 on January 14, 2015. One million copies of the upcoming Star Wars #1 comic book have already been ordered by retailers and they are all expected to sell out quickly.

Lucasfilm Ltd. and Marvel Entertainment announced the new comic book series which will be set just after the events chronicled in the film Star Wars: A New Hope. Writer Jason Aaron, artist John Cassaday and colorist Laura Martin are the team responsible for the first issue.

Aaron told Marvel.com, "There will be big moments for everyone, from Han to R2-D2. But a major part of the narrative will be driven by Luke Skywalker and his journey of discovery, a journey that will decide the fate of the entire galaxy." The story will pick up just after the destruction of the first Death Star. The series will be ongoing and will be considered canon from the first issue.

The first issue will feature one main cover by John Cassaday and variant covers by Bob McLeod, Joe Quesada, Alex Ross, Sara Pichelli, Skottie Young and J. Scott Campbell.

Marvel Publishing’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, David Gabriel, confirmed to Comicbook.com that one million copies have already been ordered by retailers. He said it is expected to be the biggest selling comic book issue in twenty years.

Now that The Walt Disney Company owns both Marvel and the rights to Star Wars through Lucasfilm, the comics will have unprecedented support. Disney is planning to roll out the comics in a number of new venues: they won't just be at comic book stores. Fans are pretty excited to see more adventures of Luke, Leia, Han and Chewy and the original cast of characters. There are plenty of stories to tell in this time frame and we look forward to see the new series going forward.
