Stephen King Takes the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, Nominates John Grisham

Posted on August 20, 2014

Bestselling author Stephen King took the ALS ice bucket challenge and then challenged John Grisham to do the same. The challenge has been going on for three weeks, with everyone from Bill Gates to Oprah Winfrey to Taylor Swift participating.

It's been an amazing fundraiser for the ALS association, raising $22.9 million so far, but the literary community has not been as well represented as actors, singers tech billionaires and politicians. After this video, that may all change. It all started when Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters did a hilarious ice bucket challenge in which they recreated the prom scene from Stephen King's classic novel, Carrie. Dave is dressed in a prom dress and tiara and happy until she realizes that everyone is laughing at her. Instead of pig's blood, they drop ice water on her. Dave's overacting is a scream, clearly he is a huge Stephen King fan. So he challenged King.

King gamely put on his shorts, went outside on his deck and got a bucket of ice water dumped on his head. King said he was doing the challenge in honor of his good friend Rocky Wood, who suffers from ALS. His friend climbs on a latter to get a good angle and dumps the icy water on King's head. King's commentary is hilarious, he mutters "oh, boy, oh boy....[expletive}...okay!"

King challenged John Grisham, who he describes as the lawyer that became a writer, to do the same challenge. Will Grisham answer the challenge? We certainly hope he does. Here is the Foo Fighters' Carrie reenactment video:
