Dr. Stephen R. Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, died today at age 79. The announcement was made by Franklin Covey Co., the company Covey co-founded. The company says Covey passed away peacefully this morning due to the residual effects of a bicycle accident he suffered this past April.

Covey wrote over two dozen self-help books about leadership, families, personal development and organization. Covey sold a total of over 20 million books, which were translated into 38 different languages. Some of his bestselling books included First Things First, Principle-Centered Leadership, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families and his most recent book, The 8th Habit.

Bob Whitman, chairman and CEO of FranklinCovey, said, "We lost a dear friend today. Stephen was one of the world's great human beings. His impact is incalculable and his influence will continue to inspire generations to come. We extend our deepest condolences to Dr. Covey's family, his wife Sandra, their nine children and spouses, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
