Stephenie Meyer Producing New Supernatural TV Show Called The Rook

Posted on November 10, 2015

Stephenie Meyer has inked a deal with Lionsgate for an interesting new television project. Meyer will be the executive producer of a new tv series called The Rook, which is based on the bestselling novel by Daniel O'Malley.

The Rook opens with British agent Myfanwy Thomas awakening in a London park, surrounded by dead bodies. She has no idea who she is or how she got into her current predicament. She finds instructions on what to do next in her pocket, which she apparently wrote to herself in case of such as situation.

She also learns from the note that she is a Rook, who works for a mysterious British government agency which keeps the country safe from supernatural threats. Agent Thomas also has some powers of her own. Oh, and someone in her own organization is trying to kill her.

The show will air on a "leading" British TV network, which Lionsgate declined to name but is probably BBC or ITV, and on Hulu. No casting has been announced, but clearly getting the right lead will be key.

Deadline reports that Meyer took the project to Lionsgate, who clearly is happy to accomodate one of their favorite authors -- the Twilight franchise has made more than $3.3 billion so far. Lionsgate did not indicate whether Meyer will also take over screenwriting duties, but there are no indications that she is.

The Rook is Australian author Daniel O'Malley's first novel. The second book in the series is called Stiletto. Hachette did a pretty funny book trailer that will give you an idea of what the series might be like. It features a secretary who works in an office that sounds a bit like the British version of the headquarters of Men in Black. She deftly handles some very odd phone calls and requests until one caller demands to know if this is the secret government agency charged with fighting the supernatural. Take a look:
