Susan Goldberg Named Editor on Chief of National Geographic Magazine

Posted on May 12, 2014

The National Geographic Society has promoted Susan Goldberg from Executive Editor of News and Features to editor in chief of National Geographic magazine. She replaced Chris Johns, who has been named chief content officer. Goldberg becomes the 10th editor in the magazine's history. Goldberg joined National Geographic earlier this year. She was previous executive editor at Bloomberg News.

Goldberg will report to Johns and Johns will report to Declan Moore, who has been named chief media officer for the Society. The changes come as the Society says it is focusing on more clearly defining and supporting its primary components, which it says include exploration and science, media, and education.

National Geographic Society CEO and President Gary Knell says, "Our efforts need to be organized around our purpose, not our platforms. We are a nonprofit with the mission to inspire people to care about the planet. We do this through storytelling, research and exploration, and education. Aligning our media teams so that they share a common vision and can bring their expertise to bear across the organization will enable us to seamlessly tell stories to, and share experiences with, our global audiences wherever they want to find us."

Brooke Runnette, president of National Geographic Television, takes on additional production responsibilities. He will be overseeing all video, television and film production for the Society.
