Posted on April 2, 1998
Barnes & Noble announced that Terry D. England won the first annual Barnes & Noble Maiden Voyage Award for his debut novel, Rewind (Avon Books). The award, which carries a prize of $2,500, recognizes the work of first-time science fiction and fantasy writers featured in Barnes & Noble's Explorations brochure during the 1997 calendar year. Rewind was chosen by readers of Explorations, who submitted their votes by ballots available in the year-end issue.
"We have had the opportunity to highlight many first-time novelists in Explorations and are extremely pleased to present the first annual Maiden Voyage Award to Mr. England," said James Killen, Barnes & Noble's science fiction buyer and publisher of Explorations. "His work was chosen by our readers from a group of very talented science fiction writers."
Explorations -- a free, bi-monthly publication devoted to the best in science fiction and fantasy and available in Barnes & Noble bookstores nationwide -- reviews new and upcoming books as well as re-releases. In the "Maiden Voyages" section of the publication, reserved for the work of exceptional first-time authors, the reviewer praises the work of this new novelist: "England does an amazing job mixing questions with great characters and a fast pace. An incredible read." Rewind is a "wonderfully realistic first novel where England shares with us his vision of how first contact with alien life form might occur and how we as humans would react."
Terry England has been a journalist for 21 years. In 1979, he was an Associated Press award winner for his science-based article on ballistic missile defense systems. He holds a master's degree in liberal studies from St. John's College in Santa Fe and a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of New Mexico. Prior to attending college, he was a member of the U.S. Air Force. England is 49 years old and lives in Santa Fe, N.M.
England will be presented with the Maiden Voyage Award by James Killen on Thursday, May 7, at 7:30 p.m., at the Barnes & Noble bookstore in Albuquerque, N.M., located at 3701-A Ellison Drive.
