The New York Times Introduces New Science Times

Posted on September 30, 1998

The New York Times announced that every Tuesday beginning October 13, readers nationwide will enjoy expanded health and fitness coverage in Science Times, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this fall. Readers will find new columns and features on a range of health topics including advances in medicine, behavior, nutrition, fitness and the health care system.

``The struggle for good health has become an increasingly significant part of today's society,'' said Cornelia Dean, science editor at The New York Times. ``This expansion is an opportunity to provide our readers with additional coverage of health and fitness and to reaffirm our commitment to thorough and lively coverage of the larger fields of science and medicine.''

Health and fitness features and behavior-related stories will be grouped together in an interior section front anchored by Jane Brody's Personal Health column and will also appear regularly on the section's front page along with Science Times's traditional science coverage. In addition to the expanded health and fitness coverage, the section will include more profiles of science personalities, a weekly letters column and ``Observatory,'' a weekly collection of off-beat, amusing and otherwise unusual short items.

Science Times will appear nationally as a stand-alone color section in all three editions of the newspaper -- the New York Edition, the Northeast Editions, and the National Edition. Previously, Science Times appeared as a separate section in only the New York and Northeast Editions.
