Posted on April 3, 2014

The Star-Ledger made some significant job cuts today. NJ.com reports that the leading New Jersey newspaper cut 167 jobs. The cuts include 40 out of 156 newsroom positions. The NJ.com article says the layoffs "cut across all departments, decimating some and taking substantial chunks out of others."

The website for The Star-Ledger resides on NJ.com, which ran the report about the job cuts. The paper is owned by Advance Publications. The company also made cuts at weekly newspapers and regional dallies. The company cut a total of 306 jobs.

A New York Times story says Advance sees the cuts as part of its strategy to pursue digital readers. Richard Vezza, publisher of The Star-Ledger, told the Times that no additional job cuts are planned. There are also no plans to eliminate any days the paper is printed.
