Toni Morrison Decides Against Writing a Memoir

Posted on March 15, 2012

The Plain Dealer reports that author Toni Morrison told students at Oberlin College - which is near her hometown of Lorian - that she no longer plans to publish a memoir. She said she did sign a contract with her publisher to write a memoir, but then she canceled it. She says she would rather continue writing fiction than stop and write a memoir.

The Plain Dealer also reports that Toni Morrison advised writers to ignore the frequently given "write about what you know" advice. She said, "People say to write about what you know. I'm here to tell you, no one wants to read that, 'cause you don't know anything. So write about something you don't know. And don't be scared, ever."
